What Is Commercial Replacement Sections?

A commercial sectional door is not a single slab. It is a stack of separate panels joined by hinges and guided by track, which is why damage in one place does not automatically mean the whole door leaves the building. The Overhead Door commercial sectional line is built around a selection of panel profiles, gauges, track styles and hardware options, and that selection is exactly why a section can usually be ordered on its own — provided the original specification is known.

Matching is most of the work. Sectional steel panels in this line are produced in 16, 20 and 24-gauge steel, so establishing the gauge of the door already hanging in the opening comes first. Profile and track style have to line up too, because track and hardware on these doors are fabricated of galvanized steel and engineered as a set with the panels rather than picked separately. Steel doors in the series run to widths of 32'2" and heights of 24'1", and steel strutting is an option on doors specified for high windload — where it is present on the original panel, it is part of what carries over.

Insulated doors are a different specification again. Thermacore® commercial sections are built as continuous foamed-in-place polyurethane between roll-formed, hot-dipped galvanized steel skins, with a dual thermal break and joint seal between the internal and external skins to hold air infiltration down. Because that thermal break and seal are part of the panel itself rather than something added at the opening, an insulated door needs the matching insulated section. These doors also run on specially designed track with heavy-duty fixtures, which is a further reason to identify the series before ordering anything.

Aluminum glass doors bring their own variables. Their sections are 1-3/4" thick corrosion-resistant 6063-T6 aluminum with galvanized fixtures and hinges, strengthened by 1/4" diameter through-rods on all stiles and rails, and they are specified with a choice of stile widths, glazing materials, track styles and finishes — bronze anodizing and 197 standard powder coats among the options. Replacing one section on a door like this means matching stile width, glazing material and finish as well as the frame, and these doors extend up to 26'2" wide.

Two details tend to surface on the day of the work. The bottom section carries a flexible PVC bottom weatherseal with a retainer, which accommodates irregular floor conditions and limits air and water penetration, so that seal and retainer get refitted whenever the bottom section is the damaged one. And because panels in this line arrive with a baked-on polyester paint finish, there is no field painting to schedule afterwards. Overhead Door Company of Bellingham services, installs and repairs sectional commercial garage doors, and pinning down the existing series, gauge and profile is where a section replacement starts.

Common Questions About Commercial Replacement Sections

Can one panel be replaced on a commercial sectional door, or does the whole door have to be replaced?

A sectional door is assembled from separate panels, and the Overhead Door commercial sectional line offers a range of panel profiles, gauges, track styles and hardware, so a single section can often be supplied on its own. Whether that is the right approach on a specific door depends on whether the original profile, gauge and track style can still be matched. Overhead Door Company of Bellingham services, installs and repairs sectional commercial garage doors.

What information is needed before a replacement section can be ordered?

The panel profile, the steel gauge — 16, 20 or 24-gauge on sectional steel doors — the track style, and whether the door is insulated or non-insulated. On aluminum glass doors the stile width, the glazing material and the finish also have to be identified, since those are specified per door rather than fixed across the series.

Does an insulated commercial door need an insulated replacement section?

Yes. Thermacore® sections are constructed with continuous foamed-in-place polyurethane between roll-formed, hot-dipped galvanized steel skins, and the dual thermal break and joint seal sit between the internal and external skins of the panel itself. Those elements are built into the section, so the replacement has to be the matching insulated panel. Thermacore doors also use specially designed track and heavy-duty fixtures.

How large can commercial sectional doors get?

Sectional steel doors in this line reach maximum widths of 32'2" and heights of 24'1", with optional steel strutting for reinforcement in high-windload applications and either electric or chain hoist operation. Aluminum glass sectional doors extend up to 26'2" wide.
