What Is Broken Cable?
Garage door cables work with the springs to raise and lower the door. The steel cables run from the bottom brackets of the door up to the drums at the top of the opening, turning the lifting force the springs generate into smooth vertical travel. When a cable frays, jumps off its drum, or snaps, the door can hang crookedly, jam in the track, or drop without warning.
Fraying almost always starts in the same two places: where the cable wraps the drum, and where it meets the bottom bracket. Those are the points where repeated bending and tension concentrate on individual strands. Damp air and seasonal temperature swings speed the process up. Caught early during an inspection, a frayed cable is a straightforward replacement rather than a breakdown.
A snapped cable needs attention straight away. With one cable gone the door has lost balanced support on that side and can tilt or slide in the track, damaging panels, track hardware, or whatever is stored below it. Trying to operate a door with a broken cable risks turning one failed part into several.
A cable repair covers the whole assembly, not just the cable. Frayed and broken cables are replaced with galvanised steel cable matched to the weight and size of the door. The drums are inspected for wear grooves and correct alignment, since a worn drum will chew through a new cable as quickly as it did the old one. The bottom brackets and connection points are examined too, because a failed cable is often a symptom of something else — a worn drum, a binding track, or a spring that is out of tension.
Because cables and springs operate as one system, the springs are inspected on every cable repair. A spring near the end of its life loads the cables unevenly and wears them early. Every repair finishes with a balance test and a manual-mode check of the full travel, confirming even cable tension on both sides.
