Several issues can cause a garage door not to open or close properly and it may need garage door repair. Here are some reasons and troubleshooting steps:

  • Remote Control Issues:

Check the remote control’s batteries and replace them if they are weak or dead.

Ensure that you are within the remote’s range and aiming it directly at the garage door opener.

  • Safety Sensor Misalignment:

Most residential garage doors have safety sensors located on both sides of the door near the floor. Make sure they are aligned and not obstructed by debris.

Clean the sensor lenses to ensure they are free from dirt or cobwebs.

  • Power Interruption:

Check if there is power to the garage door opener. Make sure the motor unit is plugged in and the circuit breaker or fuse isn’t tripped.

  • Manual Lock Engaged:

Some garage doors have a manual lock feature. Ensure that the lock is disengaged to allow the door to open.

  • Broken Springs or Cables:

If you hear a loud noise or see that the springs or cables are broken, do not attempt to operate the door. Broken springs or cables can be dangerous and should be repaired by a professional.

  • Blocked or Obstructed Track:

Inspect the tracks on both sides of the door for obstructions, like leaves, debris, or objects that may be preventing the door from moving.

  • Limit Switch Settings:

Garage door openers have limit switches that determine how far the door should open or close. If these settings are misaligned, it can prevent the door from operating correctly. Adjust the limit switch settings as needed.

  • Sensor Wiring Issues:

Check the wiring connections for the safety sensors and make sure they are secure and not damaged.

  • Remote Control Reprogramming:

If you have recently replaced the remote control or the batteries, you may need to reprogram it to the garage door opener.

  • Garage Door Opener Motor Problems:

If none of the steps above resolve your issue, there may be a problem with the garage door opener motor. It could be a malfunctioning circuit board, a worn-out motor, or other internal issues. Contact one of our reliable service technicians at Overhead Door  for diagnosis and repair.

Blinking lights on the garage door opener could mean safety sensor issues. These are designed to prevent the door from closing if there’s an obstruction or misalignment. If your garage door light is blinking and the door isn’t opening, it usually indicates a garage door opener system problem. Common causes of this are:

  • Sensor Misalignment or Obstruction:

Check the safety sensors located on both sides of the garage door near the floor. Ensure they are properly aligned and facing each other. Dust, dirt, or debris on the sensor lenses can also cause issues. Clean the lenses and remove any obstructions.

  • Sensor Wiring Issues:

Inspect the wiring connections for the safety sensors. Ensure that the wires are securely connected and not damaged.

  • Blocked Path:

Look for any objects or obstructions in the path of the garage door. Even small items in the way can trigger the safety sensors and prevent the door from closing.

  • Limit Switch Settings:

Garage door openers have limit switches that determine how far the door should open or close. If these settings are incorrect, it can cause the door to stop or reverse prematurely. Adjust the limit switch settings as needed.

  • Remote Control or Keypad Issues:

Test the remote control or keypad to see if they are working properly. If the batteries are weak or dead, replace them. Reprogram the remote control or keypad if necessary.

  • Power Interruption:

Ensure that the garage door opener unit is receiving power. Check if it’s plugged in and that the circuit breaker or fuse is not tripped.

  • Manual Lock Engaged:

Some garage doors have a manual lock feature. Make sure the lock is disengaged to allow the door to open.

  • Garage Door Opener Motor Problems:

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a problem with the garage door opener motor or its internal components. This could include issues with the circuit board, motor gear, or other parts.

If you can’t identify or resolve the problem, call us at Overhead Door to schedule a maintenance check-up so our experienced garage door technicians can inspect your garage door opener system.

If your garage door opener breaks, it can be an inconvenience and a security concern for your home and sometimes you may need an emergency garage door repair. You can try manually disengaging the opener from the door.  Then, inspect the opener for visible damage or issues like worn-out gears or a malfunctioning circuit board. A professional garage door technician, like ours at Overhead Doors can thoroughly investigate your opener and provide repairs or recommend a replacement to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.

To open a garage door using the emergency cord, locate the red rope or handle hanging from the garage door opener track and pull it down and away from the door. This action disengages the opener from the door, allowing manual lifting. Use caution as the door is heavy. Secure the open door with locks or clamps. To re-engage the opener, pull the cord back toward the opener track until it clicks into place once the issue is resolved.

You can determine if your internal garage door spring is broken by observing signs. If your garage door is suddenly heavier to lift, doesn’t stay open, or slams shut when closing, it may indicate a broken spring. You may notice a visible gap or separation in the spring itself. Broken garage door springs need to be addressed promptly. Hire an expert for repairs, because attempting to replace a broken spring can be dangerous.

You can open a garage door manually even if the spring is broken. Most garage doors have an emergency release cord or handle allowing you to disengage the door from the opener system. By pulling this cord or handle, you disconnect the opener, allowing you to manually lift the door. The door may be heavier without the spring, so exercise caution while lifting. Once open, you can secure it in place to prevent accidental closure. Broken garage door springs should be repaired by one of Overhead Door service technicians as soon as possible because it’s dangerous to operate the door without a functioning spring. If this happens you may need 24 Hour Emergency Garage Door Repair to fix it or to get your car out of the garage.

A broken torsion spring in a garage door can happen due to different reasons:

  • Wear and Tear: The most common cause of a broken torsion spring is natural wear and tear. Torsion springs are rated for a certain number of cycles (one cycle is a single opening and closing action). Over time, with repeated use, the metal can fatigue and eventually break.
  • Improper Maintenance: Lack of maintenance, like lubricating the springs, can lead to increased friction and wear, hastening the spring’s failure.
  • Rust and Corrosion: If the springs are exposed to moisture and not properly maintained, they can develop rust. Rust weakens the metal and makes it more prone to breaking.
  • Poor Quality Material: Springs made from lower quality metal may not have the endurance of higher quality springs, leading to a shorter lifespan and a higher risk of breaking.
  • Improper Installation or Adjustment: If a torsion spring is not properly installed or adjusted, it can put uneven stress on the spring, leading to premature failure.
  • Extreme Temperature Changes: Extreme temperature fluctuations may cause the metal in the springs to expand and contract, which can weaken it over time.

Regular maintenance and inspection, using high-quality springs, and ensuring proper installation and adjustment can significantly extend the life of garage door springs.

If your garage door won’t open with the emergency release, the issue could be broken torsion springs, a door off its tracks, obstructions or damage to the tracks or rollers, a faulty emergency release mechanism, or because the door is manually locked.

A blinking red light on a garage door opener indicates issues like sensor misalignment, incorrect setting adjustments, motor problems, or remote control issues. The cause can vary by model, and professional expertise is recommended if the problem continues.

In a power outage, open an electric garage door by pulling the red-handled emergency release cord down and back to disconnect it from the opener. Ensure the door is closed for safety, then lift it manually. Once power returns, reattach the door to the opener using the cord and opener. If the door is hard to open or won’t stay open, get professional help.

The time it takes to fix a garage door spring depends on the type of spring system, the complexity of the garage door mechanism, and the experience level of who is repairing it. For one of our well-trained Overhead Door licensed garage door service technicians, the process typically takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours.
